At the beginning of day two, we were visited by Dr. Mike Perko, the author of Sheldon’s Adventure and Cornered! . He told the students how he was inspired to write the books while reading to his kids, believing children’s books are limited. He then had the idea of creating a book about a turtle traveling through the sea and another book about the problems he faced because of his unusual square shaped shell. The students truly enjoyed listening to his tales of becoming an author and how Sheldon’s shell was both funny and an important life lesson. After an interesting way to start the day, the students went back to work on their own stories, brainstorming more ideas, revising their drafts and some have already seem to have a clear vision of their plot. I can’t wait to hear what they have written. Most importantly, everyone seems to be having a good time, laughing, hanging out with their friends and having the experience of an author.
